Handturned Wood, featuring removable lid
23 x 11.5 x 11.5 cm
This is an all-Australian bowl. The base is from a Banksia nut, while the main lidded bowl is from a Mallee burl. Part of the burl has been cunningly removed and turned to make a lid for the parent bowl. Unfortunately, the space under the lid is very tiny, but the addition of a lid makes a much more pleasing form with the top finial. This finial is of another Aussie classic wood, the Red Gum. Wax forms the finish of the finial, but the base is coated with a friction oil (you guessed it - Aussie Oil, a mix of waxes and lacquers that penetrate by being rubbed in), and the bowl itself is finished in Danish Oil.
