Insane Journey was inspired by reading about mental health treatment in the 1940s - 1960s in Australia as part of research for my book. It got me thinking about the way people's unique and individual journeys through mental illness (either personal or family experience) is explained by the clinical health system through models. The virus model and the stages of grief model are explored in this piece showing a woman and child's journey through the husband and father's experience of admission to a mental health hospital. The gates and the jacarandas featured in the work are at the heritage listed former Callan Park Hospital for the Insane, Rozelle, New South Wales. Callan Park was established in 1873 and continued to treat patients until 1994.
