In 2020 I was lucky enough to venture up north to Magnetic Island and hike the incredible Forts walk. With breathtaking 360 degree views of the bays that surround Magnetic Island, the Forts walk leads to fascinating WWII infrastructure, fortifications and bunkers. To top it off, along the walk I was lucky enough to view half a dozen dozy koalas in the eucalyptus trees just an arm’s length away.
My objectives within this piece were to express the intricacies, beauty and wonder of our native wildlife. The sleepy koalas looked even more adorable in the wild, so fluffy and soft. My vision was to portray on paper how I saw these beautiful creatures in person with their native surrounds.
My second aim was to bring to light the versatility and technical capabilities of which pastels hold. From softly blurred backgrounds to extremely sharp fine detailing, I was motivated to show the viewer what this underrated medium is capable of.
