Cooktown Orchids

In 1959, for the Centenary of Queensland, a state-wide vote decided the Cooktown Orchid to be the official floral emblem, or icon, of Queensland.  Hence, this delicate flower, mostly found in the regional district of Cooktown, Far Northern Queensland, came to represent the whole state - illustrating the strength of regional Queenslanders.  Although it is found in tropical regions with plenty of rainfall, it grows in exposed situations, such as savannah woodland or vine thickets - symbolic of the tenacity and adaptability of regional Queenslanders.  It has long been exported all over the world - representational of the contribution of regional Queensland to the rest of the world.  We feel the Cooktown Orchid brings all iconic regions of Queensland together, with the glass in this piece depicting the delicateness of the beauty, while its robustness is symbolised by the use of the metal elements
