Inspired by the imaginary land in the book Lost Horizon, Shangri-La. The novel itself was influenced by a romanticized view of the “mysterious” East, an attitude of the West laid down over centuries of chinoiserie, japonisme and orientalism. The design looks oriental but is, in fact, from Jacobean and Tudor embroidery – already influenced from the Orient. The book Lost Horizon as with other art forms, displays Western stereotypes of the East.
